Josh focuses on all facets of employment law, human rights, privacy, occupational health and safety and more. Josh carries a larger than life personality. His charismatic and easy-going attitude is largely shaped from being a survivor of the 2004 Tsunami in Thailand; having received various awards for his distinguished service in rescue efforts and sparking numerous engagements as a former motivational speaker. Along with this Aboriginal and Scottish heritage, Josh has an extraordinary background with varied life experiences both domestic and abroad, allowing him to relate to clients from all facets of life. Above all else, Josh brings a human element to the practice of law.

Josh is not afraid to tackle any legal issue or case. Regardless of size or complexity, he guides both federally and provincially regulated employer and employee clients with strategic advice on all aspects of employment law. His approach is not limited to a strict focus on legal issues, but rather adopts “big picture” and “out of the box” methods and creative strategies that carefully address the long-term impact that legal issues and decisions have on relationships, whether business or individual based.

His experiences include handling wrongful dismissals claims, human rights complaints, grievances to legislative bodies, disability management, accommodations and return to work plans, managing performance and disciplinary issues, reviewing and negotiating employment contracts, policy manuals, assisting with best-practices for terminations and determining severance packages, and assisting with the enforcement of post-employment obligations, including nondisclosure agreements and other restrictive covenants.

Josh also has significant litigation experience. He has appeared at all levels of court on high-impact, high-profile and complex matters, including an appearance at the Supreme Court of Canada and acting as defense counsel during a 2nd degree murder trial in front of judge and jury and many similar effective trial experiences as a former Crown Prosecutor. He has been counsel on fatality inquires and has conducted adjudications under the Canada Labour Code and has represented clients on matters under the jurisdiction of the Alberta Human Rights Commission, Alberta Employment Standards Office and Occupational Health and Safety.

When not representing clients, Josh can be found spending time with his wife and kids. He has a sincere passion for the outdoors and wildlife conservation. He treasures time spent hunting with his father and brothers and spending time with his grandfather and uncles on the family’s traditional trap line, which is maintained today. Josh also has a deep passion for others and participates in various volunteerbased activities such as Two-wheel view, Calgary Public Library, and the University of Calgary Mentorship Program.
