Kim Jones is a Senior Counsel at Walsh LLP with a career that has taken her from the chambers of the Supreme Court of Canada, through the oil fields, to the ski slopes and outdoor wilderness of Western Canada. In addition to being a passionate lawyer, Kim is a proud mom of three children who she shares with her husband of over 30 years.
Most lawyers advise on risk. Kim has managed it. For nearly twelve years Kim was the VP & General Counsel at a ski resort and recreational facility in Calgary, where as a member of the executive leadership team, she managed the legal department on a tight budget, and had executive responsibility for board governance, occupational health and safety, public safety and insurance. Kim has spent most of her career advising organizations that operate in high-risk environments, where the terrain can be unforgiving and the liability significant.
With over 20 years of in-house experience, Kim brings to her clients at Walsh a lawyer who has been the client. Kim has sat at the table with executives, business leaders, board of directors, operations teams, business partners, and insurers. She knows legal advice requires a practical, solution-oriented approach that facilitates business, and she delivers legal solutions that enable operational success within the client’s acceptable risk framework.
Kim began her career as law clerk to the Honourable Justice John C. Major at the Supreme Court of Canada after graduating from the University of Calgary with Gold Medals in both Commerce and Law. Kim has carried the same level of excellence into her legal practice, where she combines her business acumen with her legal experience to focus on contract drafting and negotiation, governance, policy development, proactive risk and incident management, and general counsel services.
When she’s not advising clients, Kim volunteers in her community and in the ski industry. She is a past board member of the Canada West Ski Areas Association, YMCA Calgary and the Calgary Counseling Center. Kim continues to serve on the Safety & Risk Committee of the Canada West Ski Areas Association.
Kim grew up in a small village in Saskatchewan and is still small town at heart. Kim has convinced her husband that her large collection of colourful shoes is an important part of her brand. Kim loves to travel with her family, whether its diving in Fiji, tenting on the Gulf Islands, cycling in Amsterdam, making gelato in Italy, paddleboarding in an ocean, or hiking in the Rockies, she is always planning their next adventure.
